Colonel Kurt A. Hoffman was born in Indiana in the summer of 1966.  His father, Gary, was a Conservation Officer with the State of Indiana and his mother, Charlene, was a housewife.

Kurt’s father Gary is a former Marine who enlisted right after high school in 1959.  Gary Hoffman was stationed in Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis.  Kurt’s family has a long line of military service including his two uncles who previously served and his cousin who is currently a Colonel in the Marine Corps. Kurt’s uncle, Terry Alan Hoffman, was killed in August of 1968 when his helicopter was shot down in Vietnam. His remains were not recovered until 1994.  Terry Alan Hoffman was buried with full military honors on the 4th of July that same year.  Kurt shares the same middle name with his uncle, and he uses his middle initial in every correspondence in memory of his uncle’s sacrifice.

In 1982, Kurt’s family moved to Florida. Since moving to the area, he has spent his time living in either Englewood or Venice for a combined total of 37 years.  His father served with the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office for 22 years retiring as a Captain. Kurt’s mother managed the local J.C. Penney's store.

Kurt attended Lemon Bay High School and was a varsity athlete lettering in Cross Country and Basketball. Shortly after high school graduation he met his wife of 33 years, Teri. Kurt was very impressed that she was already a licensed practical nurse at the age of 18 when they first met. In 1986, Kurt and Teri were married in Englewood, FL at Englewood United Methodist Church.

The Charlotte County Sheriff's Office hired Kurt in 1989 where he worked for almost seven years.  During his time with Charlotte County he obtained a bachelor’s degree from Saint Leo University in Tampa while working the midnight shift.  Kurt and Teri welcomed their child Tyler to the world in 1994.

Following almost seven years of employment with the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office, Kurt attended Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale to earn a Juris Doctor degree.  In 1998 he graduated law school and was immediately hired at the State Attorney's Office of the 12th Judicial Circuit.  After his first year of employment with the State Attorney’s Office of the 12th Judicial Circuit, he was promoted to supervisor of the office that had a staff of 9 employees.”

During his tenure as an assistant state attorney Kurt obtained a master’s degree in criminal justice, and then began teaching college classes part time while still working full time as an assistant state attorney.  He taught a variety of subjects including Constitutional Law, Police Practices and Procedures, Social Problems, Federal Court systems, and Police Liability.

In 2005, Kurt joined the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office as General Counsel, the chief legal adviser to the sheriff. After his first year as General Counsel, Kurt was promoted to Captain, and was put in charge of Internal Affairs.  In 2008, Kurt was promoted to Major, and then Colonel/Chief Deputy in 2014.

In February of 2018 Kurt’s son Tyler and his fiancee Sahori made Kurt and Teri grandparents by having a son, Atlas.

Kurt’s wife Teri is currently a Registered Nurse  at Englewood Community Hospital. Kurt and Teri both foster Labrador retrievers through Lab Rescue of Florida.  They both currently have three Labradors, which they have named Peyton, Sig, and Colt. They have had eight Labradors over their 33 years of marriage.  Teri has spent time volunteering for F.I.S.H. (Friends In Service Here), driving low income and homeless patients to their doctors’ visits. She has also been a big sister for Big Brothers Big Sisters.

When Kurt is not hanging out with his grandson, he enjoys fishing, hunting or shooting at the gun range with his son.  He is a a Life Member of the NRA and an advocate for the Second Amendment rights of our citizens.  Kurt always says that he aspires to be as good of a shot as his dad, a former Marine Corps pistol and rifle expert.
